One of the West End's most hidden-away Art Deco theatres, the Cambridge Theatre is located on the corner of Seven Dials. The venue is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s LW Theatres (formerly Really Useful Group). First opening in 1930, the venue hosted musical revues such as Charlot's Masquerade, later being used mostly as a cinema.
1946 saw the theatre spring back into life, with the London Opera Company being in residency with opera revivals such as Don Pasquale. After a period of plays, bigger-scale musicals began to settle into the theatre, such as Tommy Steele's renowned performance in Half a Sixpence (1963) and the legendary Bruce Forsyth in Little Me (1964).
Early successes included an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest and Return to the Forbidden Planet (1989-1993), which scooped an Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Further notable productions include Grease (1996-1999), Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Beautiful Game (2000), Fame (2001-2002), Madness' new musical Our House (2002-2003) and Jerry Springer - The Opera (2003-2005). Hit Broadway production Chicago played an impressive season from 2006 to 2011.
The Cambridge Theatre is now home to the RSC and Tim Minchin's multi-awarding winning musical Matilda, which made its world premiere at the theatre in November 2011. Matilda continues to play to packed-out audiences, with further productions of the musical opening in the US and Australia.
